Corrections leader Telmate announced a record-breaking 3.5 million minutes per month of total inmate tablet usage.

The Telmate Tablet is a secure handheld device that provides inmates access to photos and messages from friends and family as well as access to approved news, music and entertainment.

Not only has Telmate seen a rapid rise in their inmate table usage, they are also witnessing a profound change when it comes to the positive benefits facilities are experiencing when it comes to tablets and their positive effects on inmate behavior.

“With growing jail populations and limited staff, more and more focus is being given to managing inmate behavior using positive resources like music and libraries,” said Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Hansen, “and we are paving the way for technology to facilitate this shift.”

Although the Telmate Tablets features are mostly for communicating with loved ones and entertainment purposes, Lake County Mental Health Director, Shaun Wehle is able to see the enormity of the potential for such technology and its role in mental health.

“With the advancements in telemedicine via tablet technology, biofeedback, and the various developing technologies, there is unlimited potential for tablet technologies to manage behavior and transform physical and psychological wellness,” Wehle said, adding: “We are just beginning to scratch the surface of the potential of this form of technology.”

Another early adopter, Washington States Kitsap County, is experiencing similar benefits. “When inmates are idle, negative behaviors increase, but with the Telmate Tablet they are more well behaved,” reported Sergeant Keith Hall, Kitsap County Sheriffs Office Jail Administrative Sergeant.

According to a study by the U.S. Department of Justice National Institute of Corrections Inmate Behavior Management, there is ample evidence showing that control of the jail can be established through effective management of inmate behavior. The 2014 study, “Inmate Behavior Management: Guide to Meeting Basic Needs,” further states that a key element to behavior modification is keeping inmates occupied with productive activities that focus behavior on the positive instead of the negative.

To date, Telmate Tablets have been installed in over 25 facilities nationwide, and the numbers continue to grow. For more information about the Telmate Tablet, visit https://www.telmate.com/tabletor watch our video in YouTube at http://bit.ly/1DWLSNR.
