cowleyLocal Hero Leverages Technology to Change Inmate Behavior

Telmate’s October Hero of the Month is no stranger to the world of corrections. In fact, he’s been in law enforcement since 1988. Cowley graduated from Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, the FBI National Academy #225, and also completed a management certificate from the Idaho Peace Officers Standards and Training.

As Captain of the Jail Division of the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office, Captain Mark Cowley’s goal is to provide the utmost safety and security for his staff, the inmates and the community at large. It’s a tall order, but the Captain has it all under control, thanks in part to cutting-edge technology from Telmate.

The Captain has partnered with Telmate for the last six years, and has seen first-hand the benefits of utilizing technology in corrections for enhancing safety and control. With innovative technologies like the Telmate Tablet, the county is able to put resources in inmate’s hands that positively impacts their behavior as well as increases facility staff and inmate safety.

The Telmate Tablet is a secure, wireless device designed for correctional facilities that is transforming the way inmates spend their time. Not only does it provide them access to music, videos, learning tools and other entertainment, it also allows them to communicate with their friends and family. Secured messaging, photo sharing and video messages are all available to inmates — at no cost to the general public.

But the tablet is more than a 21st century communication device. It offers inmates a chance to use their time for something constructive. “Idle time is bad time for inmates,” says Cowley. “With the Telmate Tablet, we are providing a learning and entertainment platform to occupy their time. It just makes sense.”

According to Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Hansen, “Telmate stands by their sole mission to make customers like Cowley heroes in their daily lives, which in turn helps keep their facilities, inmates and communities safe.  We continue to push the boundaries of technology innovation to improve facility safety and control while helping inmates to maintain positive connections in their lives in an effort to reduce inmate recidivism.”
