Last week, an inmate at the Carter County Detention Center received a message from a cell phone. Using the new Telmate technology, deputies were able to determine that the call was coming from an inmate inside the facility.

Lake County extends police protection for Winfield (Sun Times)

The commissioners on Wednesday also voted unanimously to award Ontario, Ore.-based Telmate LLC a five-year phone service contract for the jail.

Among the services Telmate will provide is paying the inmates for unused phone service with debit cards instead of checks in order to avoid fraud.

The Lake County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to award Telmate LLC, of Ontario, Ore., a contract to provide the jail’s phone service for the next five years.

Telephone service in the jail became an issue two years ago when about 30 inmates claimed their pre-paid telephone services were being stolen.

An automated voicemail message is sent to an inmate each time funds are added to their account. They are informed whether the funds are for general use or if they can only be used to call a specific phone number. A customer service representative can confirm for you if the inmate/detainee has checked this voicemail or not.
